Cycling and
Cambridge's River Cam
As is obvious from its name, Cambridge
and the River Cam are inseparable. Once used by traders, the river is
now mainly a mecca for pleasure-seekers; whether used as a scenic
backdrop for a picnic or barbeque, a day out in the country, or to sit
quietly on its banks fishing, a bicycle provides an ideal means of
transport, for yourself, your food or equipment.
The river, however, also provides a
home to a large boating community in colourful house and narrow
boats. The towpaths along the river provide the main means of access for
boat owners to their homes, and a bicycle is almost a necessity for
transporting fuels and provisions from the city centre or out of town
supply shops (the CamCarts
bicycle trailer is ideal for such journeys).

Towpath Attractions
- The
Riverboat Georgina - River Tours and bespoke
Parties
- The
Bumps - the famous Cambridge University boat
races
- The Fort St. George
- One of Cambridge's favourite riverside watering holes, and not a
bad dining establishment either, the Fort was around when there was
still a ferry connecting the two riverbanks. Can't miss it on
Midsummer Common.
- The Green Dragon
- 5 Water Street, Cambridge - a lovely riverside pub, (cycle
up the towpath from the city centre, past the Fort St George, under
Elizabeth Way bridge, past the new flats at Riverside and onto
Stourbridge Common. The next bridge takes you straight to the
Green Dragon.)
- Midsummer
House - Daniel Clifford and his team serve up a
2 Michelin starred experience in gorgeous riverside surroundings on
- you guessed it - Midsummer Common.
- The
Village of Fen Ditton - Cycle along the south side of
the river, through Stourbridge Common. A new cycle path will take
you straight into the village, which has a lovely old centre. The Lynn
Strover art gallery s also worth a visit.
- Milton
Country Park - Cross to the North side of the river
via the bridge on Stourbridge Common and cycle along the towpath
until you reach Baites
Bite Lock, then turn left on the road to Milton. Park
entry will be on your left, after the first set of houses.
